There has been a lot of talk recently about the legalities of renewing your vows and whether you need to have a license.
At the end of the day renewing your vows is not a legal ceremony so the easy answer is that you don’t need any official pieces of paper, however there are a few exceptions. Apart from the exceptions you can have your ceremony wherever you like and however you like. It is worth noting that if you choose to use an officiant you may need to show them your marriage certificate.
Texas - According to the Texas state laws, a county clerk must issue a marriage license to a couple who is already married to each other.
Don’t feel that you have to wait until a big anniversary like your 10th, 25th or 50th you can renew your wedding vows whenever you want. Some couples choose to renew every year.
You could choose to renew your vows on your anniversary – which is what a lot of couples do or you could choose a date that is special to you in another way. You may want to include your children into the ceremony so you could choose to renew on their birthday – a bit tricky if you have more than one child. Or you could just decide one day when you wake up that you would like to renew your vows and do it.
Your vow renewals could just be the two of you and an intimate ceremony, to be honest you don’t even need an officiant. Or you could invite everyone and have the wedding that you have always wanted.
You don’t have to renew in an official building, but you can.
