Traditional anniversary gifts come from the list that was started in the middle ages in Germany with husbands giving garlands of silver and gold to their wives on their 25 and 50 years of marriage.
In 1922 wrote Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home, it was a bible of how to behave and the right way of doing things. There is a small chapter on wedding anniversaries and the gifts associated with them, the list was;
1st - paper
5th - wood
10th - tin
15th - crystal
20th - china
25th - silver
50th - gold
75th - diamond
Also had to share one line about anniversary gifts that makes me giggle in Emily Post's book, "These need not, however, be of value; in fact the paper, wooden and tin wedding presents are seldom anything but jokes." She had obviously never found the amazing gifts that we have here!
It has been added to since, with gifts for every year up to your 15th anniversary and then every 5 years after.
The traditional wedding anniversary gifts become more expensive as the years go by. Your 1st anniversary is celebrated with paper and then your 75th anniversary is celebrated with diamonds.
Here is the full list, or for more specific ideas use the menu on the left for your specific year.
There are lots of great traditional gifts, here are some beautiful ones for you to have a look at, hopefully you can find the perfect gift.
